Build Your Strategy

August 18 | Charleston Strategy: Balancing Offense & Defense
Holland Community Center

The Charleston can set the direction for your entire hand. We’ll look at how to make more strategic passing decisions, recognize what your tiles are telling you, and balance building your hand with paying attention to what your opponents may be doing.

August 25 | Building a Better Hand
Holland Community Center

Once you understand the basics, the next question is: How do I make better decisions with the tiles I’m dealt? This strategy class focuses on evaluating your starting hand, identifying possibilities, and making choices that help your hand develop.

August 31 | Defensive Play: How to Read the Table in American Mah Jongg
Holland Community Center

In our Defensive Play Workshop, you’ll learn how to use the Charleston to gather early information, read exposures and discards, make more thoughtful defensive decisions, and recognize when it’s time to shift from offense to defense.

This class is a great next step for players who are comfortable with the fundamentals of offensive play and hand building and are ready to deepen their strategy and build confidence at the table.

A Chance to Practice

August 26 | Beginner Guided Open Play
Holland Community Center

If you’re still getting comfortable with the game, this is a great opportunity to play with guidance nearby. Beginner Guided Open Play gives you a chance to practice, ask questions, and gain confidence without feeling like you have to know everything before you sit down.

Find Your Place at the Table

Whether you’re learning your first hand, working on your Charleston decisions, or starting to pay more attention to defensive play, remember that Mah Jongg is a journey.

Learn a little, play a little, and keep building from there.

My goal is to give you tools to add to your Mah Jongg toolbox: strategies, ideas, and ways to look at the game that you can try at the table. You get to decide which tools work for you and when you want to use them.

Most of all, I want you to feel confident, supported, and comfortable asking questions. Mah Jongg gets easier and a whole lot more fun when you have a welcoming, judgment-free place to learn and play.

I hope you’ll join me at the table this August!
